If you've ever stood in a kitchen storeroom trying to squeeze one more case of frozen chips into an already rammed freezer, you'll know the chest freezer vs upright freezer question isn't just theory. It's the difference between a smooth service and someone digging through three layers of stock at 6pm on a Friday, wondering where the chicken goujons went.
Both do the same basic job, holding food at or below -18°C, but they go about it in very different ways, and the right choice depends more on how your kitchen actually works than on price alone. Here's how the two compare, based on the freezers we stock and sell into Irish kitchens every week.
The Basic Difference
A chest freezer opens from the top, like a big storage box on legs or castors. Cold air sinks, so when you lift the lid, most of it stays put inside the cabinet rather than spilling out across the floor.
An upright freezer opens from the front, like a regular fridge, with shelves or gastronorm (GN) runners inside. It takes up less floor space for the volume it holds, and it's far easier to see and reach what's inside without leaning over the edge of a bin.
Chest Freezers: Where They Win
Chest freezers are built for bulk. Because the lid seals across the top rather than down the front, chest freezers lose less cold air every time they're opened, which genuinely matters in a kitchen where the lid gets lifted dozens of times a shift. They're also usually simpler machines, with static cooling and fewer moving parts than a fan-assisted upright, which tends to mean a lower price per litre of storage.
The trade-off is access. Everything sits in one open bin, so anything at the bottom gets buried, and it's harder to keep older stock rotated to the front in line with a proper first-in-first-out system unless you're disciplined about baskets and labelling. Chest freezers also eat up more floor space for their capacity than an upright, and the bigger models need real clearance overhead just to lift the lid fully.

Upright Freezers: Where They Win
Upright freezers earn their keep on speed and organisation. For smaller kitchens, the compact F400SN gives you 361 litres in a single-door unit that fits where a chest freezer simply wouldn't.
Because everything sits on labelled, adjustable shelves at working height, staff can grab what they need without rummaging, and it's much easier to keep stock rotation and date-checking consistent, which matters if you're ever being inspected. Uprights also have a smaller footprint relative to their height, so they suit tighter kitchens where floor space is the scarce resource.
The catch is door swing and headroom. You need clearance in front of the unit for the door, or doors on the bigger double-door models, to open fully, plus space for someone to stand and load shelves properly. Fan-assisted uprights also actively circulate air rather than letting it sink, so a longer door-open time can let more cold air escape than it would from a chest freezer of the same size.

Floor Space vs Capacity: The Numbers
This is where the two designs really pull apart. Because an upright freezer builds up rather than out, it packs a lot more litres onto the same patch of floor. Working from the cabinet footprints and rated capacities above (rounded, and excluding the extra clearance you need for doors and lids to open):
- The CF350W chest freezer works out to roughly 380 litres per square metre of floor space.
- The larger CF601 chest freezer comes in at a similar rate, around 390 litres per square metre, since it grows wider rather than taller.
- The F700SVN upright freezer manages roughly 1,150 litres per square metre, and the F1300SVN around 1,200, simply because both stand over two metres tall and use the ceiling void a chest freezer never touches.
In other words, an upright freezer can hold roughly three times the volume for the same amount of floor space as a chest freezer. Both types are straightforward to keep compliant, but the day-to-day routine differs. Chest freezers have a single continuous internal surface, easy to wipe down, but stock sits in layers, so a proper HACCP stock rotation system depends on staff actually using baskets, dividers and clear labelling rather than just piling stock in. Skip that discipline and older stock quietly works its way to the bottom.
Upright freezers with individual shelves make date rotation almost automatic; the newest stock goes to the back of a shelf, the oldest stays at the front and gets used first, and a quick visual check tells you what needs using. For businesses that get regular environmental health inspections, that visible organisation is genuinely worth something.
Energy Use: Don't Assume, Check the Label
You'll often read that chest freezers are automatically the more efficient option because of the top-opening design, and there's real physics behind that, less cold air escapes when you open a lid than when you open a door. But it doesn't always show up on the energy rating in practice. There's no single right answer, it depends on how your kitchen actually operates day to day.
- Busy kitchen, frequent access during service: go upright. The organisation and speed of grabbing what you need outweighs the extra floor space it uses.
- Back-of-house bulk storage, opened a handful of times a day: a chest freezer gives you more litres for your euro and holds temperature better between openings.
- Tight kitchen with limited floor space: upright wins on footprint for the capacity.
- Large-scale or seasonal storage, think Christmas turkeys, event catering, or a wholesale sideline: at a certain point it's worth pricing up a dedicated freezer room instead of multiple chest or upright units.
